Step-by-step plan

1. Perform a quick external check for robbing or high wasp activity.
2. Smoke the entrance gently before opening.
3. Inspect the brood box to ensure the queen is still present or that fresh eggs are visible.
4. Check the super to see if the bees are storing nectar.
5. Observe the brood pattern to confirm it remains healthy.
6. Check the Apivar strips to ensure they are correctly placed and not blocked by propolis.
7. Record all findings, including the state of the honey stores.

Do not do

• Do not disturb the brood box more than necessary.
• Do not remove the Apivar strips unless instructed by a lead beekeeper.
• Do not feed the colony without consulting a lead beekeeper.
• Do not open the hive if temperatures are too low or if there is heavy rain.

Escalate if

• You notice a sudden drop in colony strength.
• You see signs of disease such as irregular brood patterns, sunken or perforated cappings, or unusual odors.
• The colony becomes significantly more aggressive during inspection.
• You see signs of heavy robbing from wasps or other bees.
• The queen is missing and there are no eggs for two consecutive inspections.
