Step-by-step plan

1. Approach the hive quietly and observe entrance activity for normal foraging behavior.
2. Light your smoker and apply a small amount of smoke at the entrance.
3. Open the hive carefully and remove a frame to inspect for eggs, larvae, and sealed brood.
4. Assess space availability in the super and ensure the queen excluder is correctly positioned.
5. Check for any signs of Varroa or pests, as is standard practice during summer.
6. Complete the inspection records noting the colony's overall health and temperament.
7. Close the hive gently and ensure the roof is secured.

Do not do

• Do not over-smoke the colony.
• Do not leave the brood chamber open for extended periods.
• Do not manipulate brood frames unnecessarily.
• Do not ignore signs of increased Varroa or pest pressure.
